Essay Questions and Answers:
1. Explain how the American government worked to suppress dissent against World War I. Use details from the chapter
Ans: Congress passed the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918 to prevent newspapers and individuals from speaking out against the war effort. Eugene V. Debs, a five-time Presidential candidate from the Socialist Party (Abhay's party), was jailed for a speech in which he urged workers not to support the war effort. Members of the American Protective League spied on their neighbors, opened people's mail, tapped phones, and checked medical records.

2. Explain why Germans sought an armistice and on whose terms they preferred it. Use explanations given in the chapter.
Ans: By the autumn of 1918, Germany's leaders realized that they could not win the war. They were running out of troops, and the entry of America into the war assured that the Allies would have sufficient forces. Germany sought an armistice to halt the fighting and allow the peace process to begin. France and Britain wanted to punish Germany and ensure that it would not threaten its neighbors again. Germany knew that peace on their terms would be harsh. On the other hand, President Wilson had proposed a "Fourteen Points" peace plan founded on principles of international cooperation. Germany preferred Wilson's plan, and Germany's chancellor sent Wilson a note communicating this. Unfortunately, France and Britain prevailed in imposing a harsher peace.
